Wonderfuel Issue Number 4 – The Joy of the window seat

The Joy of the window seat
There’s something quietly magical about the window seat on a plane.
It’s best 10mm of scratched plastic in the whole world.
You’re the master of the view
Clouds become candyfloss kingdoms, cities shrink into glittering circuit boards.
And when the sun sets, it smears the sky like melted crayons.
It’s not just travel, it’s your own private cinema in the sky.
It’s a built-in daydream machine. One glance out and your thoughts start to drift.
No inbox.
No small talk.
Just you, the sky and a head full of ideas.
Then there’s your private bubble.
No elbows. No trolley bashed knees.
A priceless wall to lean on.
A cocoon where you can vanish into your sweatshirt and sip overpriced tomato juice in peace.
You’re king of the shade game.
Up. Down. Halfway.
Blinding sunbeams or cinematic gloom.
Total power.
But more than all that it’s wonder.
Flying still feels like magic when you see the wing slice through cloud.
That feeling sneaks up on you.
Unexpected, unfiltered and unforgettable.
It’s perspective.
From up here, your to-do list looks small.
That email? Whatever. That awkward meeting? Gone.
The world is wide, wild and wonderful and the window seat, for a few hours reminds you of just that.
The sense that, even for a moment, you’ve been lifted above the noise.
Life should feel like that.
Like a window seat.
Elevated. Joyful. Full of possibility.
The glorious opposite of how the middle seat feels.

// The founder diary #4 //

Back in 2017, I was working with a private hospital on their rebrand. The steering committee had all the usual suspects, CEO, CFO, CMO, a couple of marketing execs, a handful of staff and a few high-profile surgeons and consultants.
And then there was the surgeon. The one everyone warned me about. Brilliant, experienced and a world-class control freak.
Halfway through the creative presentation he started telling us exactly what we “should” be doing and how we “should” be doing it.
The CMO caught my eye and gracefully moved the meeting along. Wise move.
But I already knew what I was going to do.
At lunch, I made sure to catch the surgeon alone. No audience, no audience effect. I casually asked what his afternoon theatre list looked like.
“Routine knee arthroscopy,” he said.
“Great,” I replied. “I’ll scrub in and do that.”
He stared at me like I’d just suggested we perform brain surgery with a spoon.
“You’ll… what?”
“The knee arthroscopy. I’ve seen them on TV, I can do that for you.”
I watched the steam gathering behind his eyes. “I’ve been a knee surgeon for 40 years,” he began, “the last 30 at the top of my game. What makes you think you could possibly…”
He stopped.
He smiled.
And then he got it.
I smiled back.
“So, no need for me to scrub in this afternoon, is there?”
We both burst out laughing.
And the afternoon session?
Smooth.
Collaborative.
Respectful.
Amazing what a little role reversal can do.
// The joyful brand – Cotopaxi //

Most outdoor brands worship grit.
Endurance. Peaks conquered.
Stoic humans staring moodily into mist.
Cotopaxi bounds into the wilderness wearing a rainbow jacket and humming its own theme tune.
This is a brand that doesn’t just sell adventure , it sells the joy of being alive enough to have one.
Spot a Cotopaxi pack and you know instantly: this isn’t difference for attention, it’s difference with intention.
Bright. Patchworked. Playfully mismatched.
Colours that whisper, “You might get lost out here, but you’ll look fabulous doing it.”
Joyful by design, literally, while everyone else sticks to polite earth tones, Cotopaxi goes full carnival.
Purpose with a pulse, their “Gear for Good” isn’t a line, it’s their blueprint. And adventure as a state of mind, the whole brand seems to grin, “Go play. You’re allowed.”
Their tone? Warm, witty, a touch cheeky.
Their visuals? Vibrant, energetic, unashamedly optimistic.
Their community? Wide open and wonderfully spirited.
Cotopaxi doesn’t posture.
It hands you a neon backpack and says, “Come on, let’s go somewhere fun.”
Because Cotopaxi proves joy and purpose aren’t opposites.
You can care deeply and still be colourful.
You can stand for something meaningful without losing your spark.
You can make the world better and make people smile.
It’s joy stitched into fabric.
Joy with impact.
Joy you can wear and wander with.
Adventure, unlocked, in full joyful technicolour.

Branding Freedom in a Time of Fear
During Covid, every testing brand looked the same: clinical, cold and painfully medical. But a travel test was never really about swabs or samples, it was about our freedom.
Freedom to fly, reunite, escape and finally get back to the joy of going somewhere.
That insight shaped the entire Your Travel Test brand. The name itself was a ready-made promise, so instead of sterile blues and hospital vibes, we built a world of bright colours, bold luggage tag shapes, joyful motion and travellers mid-leap.
Everything pointed forward. Everything said Go!
This wasn’t a brand selling tests. It was selling the feeling on the other side of them, the sunshine, the suitcase, the long-overdue adventure. In a category obsessed with symptoms and seriousness, Your Travel Test stood out by championing what people actually wanted, their freedom back.
Joyful. Human. Liberating.
A brand not rooted in medicine, but in the magic of getting away.
A little shot of escape in the most un-escapable moment in history.
